## Half a Journey by Sea, Half by Air

A transatlantic cruise solves one direction of your travel and leaves the other entirely to the airline. Sail from Florida to Barcelona in the spring and you need a single business class flight home. Cross from Southampton to New York on Queen Mary 2 and you need a single flight out. There is no return leg, no round trip, nothing to average the fare against - and that is precisely where public airfare pricing behaves worst.

One-way business class tickets on transatlantic routes are quoted punitively on booking sites, frequently at or near the price of a full round trip. Our contract fares are sold per direction, which means the one-way is often a fraction of the published figure. Repositioning passengers are, seat for seat, the clients we save the most money for, and this page explains exactly how the itineraries work.

## The Crossings and Repositioning Sailings We Book Most

| Cruise | Route | Season | Flight required |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Cunard Queen Mary 2 Transatlantic Crossing | Southampton to New York, or reverse | April to December, 7 nights | One-way to or from [London](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/london) Heathrow (LHR); Southampton is about 1 hour 15 minutes away |
| Celebrity fall repositioning | Barcelona, Rome or Lisbon to Fort Lauderdale | October-November | One-way business class into Barcelona (BCN), [Rome](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/rome) (FCO) or Lisbon (LIS); the ship brings you home |
| Royal Caribbean fall repositioning | Barcelona or Southampton to Florida | October-November | One-way into Barcelona (BCN) or London (LHR) |
| Princess fall repositioning | Rome (Civitavecchia) or Southampton to Fort Lauderdale | September-November | One-way into Rome (FCO) or London (LHR) |
| Holland America fall repositioning | Rome, [Amsterdam](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/amsterdam) or [Copenhagen](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/copenhagen) to Fort Lauderdale | September-October | One-way into FCO, AMS or CPH |
| Norwegian and MSC fall repositioning | Barcelona, Rome or Lisbon to Miami and New York | October-November | One-way into BCN, FCO or LIS |
| Oceania and Regent Seven Seas fall crossings | Barcelona, Rome or Lisbon to Miami and New York, often via the Atlantic islands | October-November | One-way into BCN, FCO or LIS; longer, port-rich crossings of 12 to 16 days |
| Spring eastbound repositioning | Florida to Barcelona, Rome or Lisbon, with Celebrity, Princess, Holland America, Norwegian, MSC and Oceania | March-May | One-way business class home from Europe after disembarkation |
| Fall Northern Europe repositioning | Southampton, Amsterdam or Copenhagen to New York and Florida | September-October | One-way into LHR, AMS or CPH |

If your crossing is not listed, the structure holds: one sailing, one flight, one direction. Tell us the ship and the disembarkation or embarkation port and we will quote the single leg.

## Which Direction Are You Flying?

**Fall, westbound cruise.** The ship sails from Europe to Florida or New York, so your flight is the outbound: a one-way in business class into Barcelona, Rome, Lisbon, London, Amsterdam or Copenhagen, two days before embarkation. Flying east overnight in a flat bed and arriving with a pre-cruise night in hand is the version of this trip our clients repeat year after year.

**Spring, eastbound cruise.** The ship carries you to Europe; your flight is the return home, often several weeks later if you stay on to travel. Because the flight is a standalone one-way, the date is entirely yours - extend through the Mediterranean spring and fly home from whichever city you finish in, not necessarily the one where the ship docked.

**Queen Mary 2, either direction.** The classic pairing is one crossing by sea and one by air. Eastbound by ship and home from London in business class, or out to London by air and home across the Atlantic at sea. Both versions need exactly one flight, and both are quoted the same painful way on public engines.

## Why the One-Way Fare Is Our Strongest Product

Airlines publish one-way transatlantic business class at levels designed to push travelers into round trips; it is common to see a single direction priced at 70 to 90 percent of the return fare. The contract fares we hold with carriers including [British Airways](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/british-airways), [Virgin Atlantic](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/virgin-atlantic), [Iberia](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/iberia), [ITA Airways](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/ita-airways), [Lufthansa](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/lufthansa), [Air France](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/air-france), [KLM](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/klm), [Delta](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/delta-air-lines), [United](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/united-airlines) and [American Airlines](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/american-airlines) are priced per direction. On a typical repositioning itinerary the difference is not marginal - it frequently decides whether the flight is business class at all.

The comparison worth making is not against the published one-way, which almost nobody should pay, but against the cruise line's own air program. Line-sold air on a repositioning sailing shares the usual limitations: restricted carrier choice, late ticketing, and little say in routing. A one-way contract fare gives you the airline, the schedule and immediate ticketing, with normal mileage accrual.

## Timing the Booking

Repositioning sailings are seasonal and finite - the ships cross once each way per year - so the surrounding flights compress twice: once when the cruise itself sells, typically nine to twelve months out, and again in the final weeks when unsold premium seats disappear from the exact dates every passenger on the ship needs. Book the flight when the sailing is confirmed. For October crossings, that means the flight should be ticketed by spring.

For westbound sailings, arrive in the embarkation city two days early, as with any transatlantic itinerary. Missing a repositioning departure is worse than missing an ordinary cruise: there is no next port a short flight away, only open ocean for a week.

## Plan Your Crossing With a Specialist

Tell us the ship, the direction and the sailing date, and we will quote the single flight that completes the journey - including any stay you want to build in before or after. We are IATA-accredited and ticket directly with the operating airline, so the reservation sits in the carrier's own system under your name. Quotes are free, without obligation, and usually same-day.

## FAQ

Your questions answered - everything you need to know before booking.

###

Airlines publish one-way transatlantic fares at deliberately high levels to steer travelers into round trips, often at 70 to 90 percent of the return price. Contract fares are sold per direction, which is why a repositioning flight through an agent is frequently a fraction of the published figure.

###

A single one-way in business class into Barcelona, arriving two days before embarkation. The ship carries you home to Florida or New York, so there is no return leg to book at all.

###

One flight, in whichever direction the ship does not cover. Eastbound by sea means a one-way home from London Heathrow; westbound by sea means a one-way out to London, with Southampton about an hour and fifteen minutes from the airport.

###

Yes, and it is one of the best reasons to sail eastbound. Your flight home is a standalone one-way, so the date and even the departure city are yours to choose. Many clients disembark in Barcelona and fly home from Rome or Lisbon a month later.

###

Eastbound from Florida to Europe in March through May, and westbound from Europe to Florida and New York in September through November, with lines including Celebrity, Princess, Holland America, Norwegian, MSC and Oceania. Queen Mary 2 crosses on a regular schedule from April to December.

###

As soon as the cruise is confirmed, ideally six to nine months out. Every passenger on the ship needs a flight on nearly the same dates, so premium seats to the embarkation city thin out well before the sailing.

###

This is the one itinerary where a missed ship cannot be chased to the next port, because the next stop is across the ocean. It is why we ticket repositioning clients to arrive two days early and recommend insurance with missed-connection cover on every crossing.

###

In nearly all cases, yes. The tickets are issued in standard business class booking classes with carriers such as British Airways, Delta and Lufthansa, and earn under the airline's normal rules. Give your specialist your frequent flyer number when you book.
