## Four Ports, One Ticket Structure

Nearly every Mediterranean cruise begins or ends in one of four cities: [Barcelona](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/barcelona), [Rome](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/rome), [Athens](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/athens) or [Venice](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/venice). The itineraries that sail between them are increasingly one-way, which means the correct flight is almost never a round trip. It is an open-jaw ticket - into one gateway, home from another, on a single reservation - and it is the structure public booking engines price worst of all.

We book these flights every week, in business and first class, for travelers sailing with Viking, Celebrity, Princess, Oceania, Regent Seven Seas, Silversea, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Holland America. This page covers the specific sailings we see most, the airports that serve them, and the flight decisions that matter before a Mediterranean embarkation.

## The Mediterranean Sailings We Book Most

| Cruise | Route | Length | Flights required |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Viking Iconic Western Mediterranean | [Barcelona](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/barcelona) to [Rome](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/rome) (Civitavecchia), or reverse | 8 days | Open-jaw: into Barcelona (BCN), home from Rome (FCO) |
| Viking Italian Sojourn | Rome (Civitavecchia) to [Venice](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/venice), or reverse | 8 days | Open-jaw: into Rome (FCO), home from Venice (VCE) |
| Viking Venice, the Adriatic & Greece | Venice to [Athens](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/athens) (Piraeus), or reverse | 8 days | Open-jaw: into Venice (VCE), home from Athens (ATH) |
| Viking Iberian Explorer | Barcelona to [Lisbon](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/lisbon), or reverse | 8 days | Open-jaw: into Barcelona (BCN), home from Lisbon (LIS) |
| Celebrity Xcel and fleet, western Mediterranean | Barcelona round trips and one-ways toward Rome | 7-12 nights | Round trip to Barcelona (BCN), or open-jaw home from Rome (FCO) |
| Celebrity Greek Isles | Ravenna (for Venice) or Athens, round trips via Santorini and Mykonos | 7-11 nights | Round trip to Venice (VCE) or Athens (ATH) |
| Princess Mediterranean with Greek Isles | Barcelona to Rome, or Rome to Athens, and reverses | 7-14 days | Open-jaw between BCN, FCO and ATH |
| Royal Caribbean Western Mediterranean | Barcelona or Rome round trips | 7 nights | Round trip to Barcelona (BCN) or Rome (FCO) |
| Norwegian Greek Isles | Athens (Piraeus) round trip | 7-10 days | Round trip to Athens (ATH) |
| Oceania Riviera and Vista, Mediterranean | Barcelona to Rome, Rome to Athens, Trieste to Rome, and reverses | 7-14 days | Open-jaw between BCN, FCO, ATH, VCE and TRS |
| Regent Seven Seas Mediterranean | Barcelona to Rome, Athens to Venice, and reverses | 7-14 nights | Open-jaw; an all-suite line whose guests almost always fly business or first |
| Silversea Mediterranean | Athens to Venice (Fusina), Barcelona to Lisbon, and reverses | 7-12 days | Open-jaw between ATH, VCE, BCN and LIS |

If your sailing is not listed, the structure still applies. Tell us the ship and the two ports and we will build the ticket around them.

## The Four Gateways and Their Transfers

**Barcelona (BCN).** The easiest embarkation in the Mediterranean. The cruise terminals sit about twenty minutes from the airport, and the city rewards an early arrival more than almost any other port.

**Rome (FCO).** The ships do not dock in Rome. They sail from Civitavecchia, roughly an hour and fifteen minutes away, and the transfer crosses city traffic. This is the port where a same-day flight arrival goes wrong most often, and the reason we insist on at least one pre-cruise night in Rome.

**Athens (ATH).** Piraeus is about forty-five minutes from the airport. Eastern Mediterranean and Greek Isles sailings with Celebrity, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean turn here weekly through the season.

**Venice (VCE).** The one that catches people out. Large ships have not docked in central Venice for several years; sailings marketed as Venice actually depart from Ravenna, Trieste or Marghera, up to two and a half hours away. Confirm your exact pier before we ticket the flight, and treat the published departure time with more respect than anywhere else on this page.

## Airlines We Book Into the Mediterranean

[Iberia](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/iberia) reaches Barcelona through [Madrid](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/madrid) with short, frequent connections, and covers [Lisbon](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/lisbon) for Iberian sailings. [ITA Airways](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/ita-airways) flies into Rome nonstop from the US East Coast, which makes it the natural carrier for Civitavecchia departures. [Lufthansa](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/lufthansa), [SWISS](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/swiss-airlines) and [Austrian Airlines](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/austrian-airlines) connect the whole basin through [Frankfurt](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/frankfurt), [Munich](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/munich), [Zurich](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/zurich) and [Vienna](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/vienna), and [Air France](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/air-france) covers Barcelona, Rome and Athens through [Paris](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/paris).

In season, [Delta](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/delta-air-lines), [United](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/united-airlines) and [American Airlines](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/american-airlines) fly nonstop from the US into Barcelona, Rome and Athens, and [Turkish Airlines](https://business-fares.com/deal/airline/turkish-airlines) reaches Athens and the eastern ports through [Istanbul](https://business-fares.com/deal/city/istanbul). The best open-jaw fares frequently mix two carriers on one ticket - into Barcelona on one airline, home from Rome on another - which is exactly the combination public engines fail to surface.

## When to Fly, and What It Costs

The Mediterranean season runs April through November. July and August carry the highest cruise traffic and the highest business class demand; May, June, September and October are the months our clients with flexible dates choose, for cooler ports and meaningfully better premium fares. Shoulder-season sailings from Barcelona and Athens are often the best value in the entire European program.

Book the flights as soon as the cruise is confirmed. Mediterranean cruises are typically reserved nine to twelve months out, and business class award of the best fares follows the same curve - the closer to summer, the fewer seats remain at contract rates.

## Arrive Early. It Is Not Optional Here.

One day before embarkation is the minimum, and only with a nonstop into the departure city itself. Two days is our standard recommendation for any transatlantic arrival. For Civitavecchia and the Venice-area piers, where the transfer alone can absorb two hours, two nights is the responsible answer. A pre-cruise night in Rome or Barcelona is not a cost - it is usually the best-value part of the holiday.

## Plan Your Mediterranean Cruise Flights With a Specialist

Tell us the ship, the sailing date and the two ports, and we will work backwards from the embarkation time - open-jaw structure, pre-cruise nights, mobility assistance if you need it. We are IATA-accredited and ticket directly with the operating airline. Quotes are free, without obligation, and usually same-day.

## FAQ

Your questions answered - everything you need to know before booking.

###

Rome Fiumicino (FCO). Civitavecchia is about one hour and fifteen minutes from the airport, and the transfer crosses Rome traffic. We recommend arriving at least one night early, ideally two, and staying in Rome rather than near the port.

###

Yes. That is an open-jaw fare, and it is the standard structure for one-way Mediterranean sailings with Princess, Oceania and Viking. On a single reservation it usually costs far less than two one-way tickets and often less than a round trip to either city.

###

Large ships have not docked in central Venice for several years. Sailings sold as Venice leave from Ravenna, Trieste or Marghera, up to two and a half hours from Venice airport. Confirm your exact pier before booking flights and allow more transfer time than a Venice arrival suggests.

###

May, June, September and October. July and August carry peak demand from both cruise and leisure traffic. If your sailing dates are flexible, a shoulder-season departure from Barcelona or Athens usually saves the most on the flights.

###

Yes. We build flights around any Celebrity sailing, including Xcel's Barcelona season. For round trips we quote Barcelona both ways; for one-way itineraries ending in Rome or Athens we quote the open-jaw.

###

Nonstop, whenever your dates allow it. A connection is the single most common cause of a missed embarkation. If a connection is unavoidable, we route it through hubs with high frequency, such as Madrid, Paris or Munich, and we add a day to your arrival buffer.

###

Two days for most transatlantic arrivals. One day is the minimum and only with a nonstop into the embarkation city itself. For Civitavecchia and the Venice-area piers, plan two nights because of the long transfers.

###

In nearly all cases, yes. Tickets are issued in standard business class booking classes with carriers such as Iberia, ITA Airways, Lufthansa and Delta, and earn under each airline's normal rules. Give your specialist your frequent flyer number when booking.
