Silicon Valley's Air Bridge to Europe
San Francisco to London is the air bridge between Silicon Valley and Europe's financial capital, and few routes anywhere carry a higher share of premium travelers. Venture capital, software, banking and biotech keep demand for lie-flat seats strong throughout the year. At Business Fares, we hold unpublished business class fares between San Francisco and London that deliver substantial savings on this ten-hour crossing, and our one-way fares are outstanding, built for founders, consultants and relocating professionals who rarely fly symmetrical round trips.
Airlines and Cabins on the Route
Three partner airlines fly the route nonstop from SFO. United Airlines, a Star Alliance member operating from its own San Francisco hub, flies up to two daily Polaris departures to Heathrow. British Airways, part of Oneworld, matches with up to two daily flights featuring the Club Suite, including A380 service that also carries a First cabin.
Virgin Atlantic completes the field with daily Upper Class service. That gives Bay Area travelers around five nonstop departures a day, all fully lie-flat with direct aisle access, spread across both major alliances so you can keep earning wherever your status lives. Fares between the three carriers diverge sharply on individual dates, which is the gap our consultants work.
SFO Only, and the Terminal Map
All Bay Area service to London departs from SFO; neither Oakland nor San Jose has Heathrow flights. United operates from Terminal 3 with its Polaris Lounge, one of the best premium lounges in the country, while British Airways and Virgin Atlantic depart from the International Terminal. At Heathrow, United lands at Terminal 2, British Airways at Terminal 5 and Virgin Atlantic at Terminal 3, which matters if you are connecting onward within Europe, and we build it into every multi-city quote.
Ten Hours You Can Actually Use
Eastbound flight time is about ten hours, long enough to split cleanly between work and sleep. Departures cluster in the late afternoon and evening, arriving at Heathrow from mid-morning onward. A typical pattern: two or three hours of work on Wi-Fi after takeoff, dinner, then a full seven hours flat before breakfast on approach. Westbound runs closer to eleven hours but lands the same day, with morning Heathrow departures reaching SFO by early afternoon.
Arriving Ready to Work
British Airways and Virgin Atlantic operate arrivals facilities at Heathrow with showers, hot breakfast and pressing, and United passengers have an arrivals lounge at Terminal 2, which turns an overnight landing into a working morning. From the airport, the Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in about fifteen minutes, while the Elizabeth line runs directly to Liverpool Street and Canary Wharf, the better option for the City and for fintech addresses further east.
What You Need Before You Fly
US citizens need an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before boarding any flight to the United Kingdom. It costs £20, stays valid for two years or until your passport expires, and is issued through the official UK government app, usually within minutes; allow three working days to be safe. Return fares also include UK Air Passenger Duty, currently £244 per passenger in premium cabins on transatlantic routes, which is why a London-originating itinerary prices above the identical trip starting in San Francisco. Both are built into every fare we quote.
When to Book
Bay Area demand peaks around the major conference calendar and the September-to-November corporate season, with a second push from March through June and heavy leisure overlay in summer. January and February are the softest months. Three to four months of lead time is a reasonable target for peak dates, but this is also a route of last-minute board meetings and term sheets, and our contract fares plus one-way strength are designed for precisely those calls.
Beyond London
Bay Area clients frequently extend trips across Europe, adding Amsterdam or Zurich to a London itinerary on one open-jaw premium ticket. See our full United Kingdom fares, or combine the UK with the Netherlands and Switzerland in a single itinerary at private consultant-only fares.

FAQ
Your questions answered - everything you need to know before booking.
Roughly nine and three-quarter to ten and a half hours eastbound, and ten and three-quarter to eleven and a half hours on the return. The length works in your favor: there is room for several hours of work and a full night of sleep on the same crossing.
United Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, all from SFO to Heathrow. United and British Airways each fly up to two departures daily, and all three products are fully lie-flat with direct aisle access.
Typically around five departures daily across the three carriers, most leaving SFO in the late afternoon and evening for arrivals into Heathrow from mid-morning onward.
Yes, and this route is one of our best for them. Our contract one-way fares are often far below published levels, which suits founders and consultants whose return depends on how the week goes. Call before booking any single-direction trip.
United Polaris, the British Airways Club Suite and Virgin Atlantic Upper Class are all fully lie-flat with direct aisle access. The honest differentiators are schedule, lounge and loyalty program, and your consultant can compare all three against your dates and status.
Yes. All three carriers offer Wi-Fi, power at every seat and large tray tables, and the ten-hour crossing comfortably fits two to three hours of work, dinner and still seven hours of sleep. Many clients treat the eastbound as their most productive half-day of the week.
British Airways regularly schedules the A380 on this route, carrying its Club Suite business cabin and a First cabin. Its quiet upper deck is a favorite of frequent flyers, and our fares make the step up to First smaller than you would expect.
Three to four months ahead for summer and the conference season; January and February reward shorter windows. Because we hold unpublished contract fares rather than published inventory, we regularly source seats for last-minute trips when public sites show nothing workable.
