The Midwest's Premier Transatlantic Route
Chicago O'Hare is the Midwest's transatlantic powerhouse, and its link to London is the region's most important premium route. Consulting firms, trading houses, manufacturers and law firms across the Midwest send a constant stream of executives to the UK, which keeps competition among carriers sharp. Airlines and Cabins on the Route
Three partner airlines fly the route nonstop, and unusually, they represent both major alliances. British Airways operates up to three daily departures to Heathrow, most featuring the Club Suite with sliding doors and direct aisle access, coordinated with American Airlines under the Oneworld joint business; American adds its own daily Flagship Business service from its O'Hare hub.
On the Star Alliance side, United Airlines flies multiple daily Polaris departures from its own O'Hare operation. That adds up to five to six nonstops per day in each direction, all fully lie-flat, and it means Chicago travelers can hold status and earn miles in either ecosystem without giving up schedule. O'Hare, Not Midway
All transatlantic service leaves from O'Hare; Midway has no long-haul international flights. British Airways and American depart from Terminal 5 and Terminal 3 respectively, United from Terminal 1, so check your terminal before setting out, especially if you connect from a domestic flight on the other alliance. O'Hare's rail link and express lanes make timing from the Loop predictable outside evening rush.
At Heathrow, the pattern mirrors most US gateways: British Airways lands at Terminal 5, American at Terminal 3, and United at Terminal 2. For onward European connections, the arrival terminal shapes your transfer time, and we account for it when building multi-city tickets.
Overnight or Daytime?
Eastbound flight time is around seven and a half hours, comfortably long enough for dinner and a proper night's sleep. Most departures leave O'Hare between late afternoon and 10 PM, landing at Heathrow between 6 AM and early afternoon. British Airways also typically operates a morning departure that arrives in London late evening, a good option if you prefer to work through the flight and sleep in a hotel bed before a full first day.
Westbound runs closer to nine hours against the jet stream, but you gain the time back on the clock: a midday departure from Heathrow lands in Chicago mid-afternoon the same day.
Arriving Ready to Work
An overnight from Chicago lands early enough for same-day meetings, and the ground game seals it. British Airways operates an arrivals facility at Heathrow with showers, breakfast and pressing, and United passengers have an arrivals lounge at Terminal 2. From the airport, the Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in about fifteen minutes, while the Elizabeth line runs straight through to the City and Canary Wharf, usually beating a taxi through morning traffic.
What You Need Before You Fly
US citizens need an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before boarding any flight to the United Kingdom. It costs £20, is valid for two years or until your passport expires, and is issued through the official UK government app, usually within minutes; allow three working days to be safe. Your return fare also includes UK Air Passenger Duty, currently £244 per passenger in premium cabins on transatlantic routes, which is why itineraries originating in London price higher than the same trip starting in Chicago. Both are already reflected in every fare we quote.
When to Book
Corporate demand from Chicago peaks from September through November and again from March through June, with summer leisure filling July and August. January and February are reliably the softest months. Aim for roughly three months of lead time on peak dates; in winter, shorter windows still produce strong pricing.
